As documented in Daniel Pipes groundbreaking book, Militant Islam Reaches America, Muslims have not fared well in recent centuries. Once at the helm of nearly every cultural revolution, by the thirteenth century decline set in leading to the demise of Islam that has pervaded the religion with confusion. Muslims have had a difficult time explaining the root causes of what has caused the loss of power and prominence they once held. (i.e. Medieval times)
As a result of the evolving nature of the Islamic religion, three types of Muslims represent the faith in our modern day.
Secularist Muslims
This Muslim view believes that by emulating the West, Islam can be advanced. Turkey and the United States are prime examples of Islamic secularism. This is a view held by a small number of Muslims.
Reformist Muslims
This is the very popular middle ground. Muslims in this group seek to blame the West for their own misfortune. Reformists believe the West stole its glory and now is simply emulating Islam. This belief allows Muslims to unashamedly live within the Western 'decadent' culture. To do this Muslims must reinterpret the Qur'an to fit their modern view. (This can be compared to Christians who water down the Bible to alleviate their conscience.) The Reformist Muslim attempts to emulate the West without fully acknowledging it. This view permeates the majority of the Islamic faith.
Fundamentalist Muslims (i.e. Militant Islam, Islamism)
The three main features of fundamentalists: a strict interpretation of the Shari'a (the sacred law of Islam), a complete rejection of Western cultural influences (at least outwardly), a replacement of faith with ideology.
In conclusion, Fundamentalists are the main source of the current threat to the United States and other peace loving nations. Fundamentalists believe that the only way to return Islam's former glory is to return to the old ways. They demand that Muslims apply the sacred law of Islam completely, without any exceptions. As a result of their zeal, they display a deep hatred for non-Muslims, especially Christians and Jews.
