This week, several Qassam rockets were launched towards Israel by members of Hamas and Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip. The attacks brought to an end what the media has called a successful Hamas "cease-fire" which began in November 2006. However, reports have indicated that nearly 230 rockets have been launched against Israel during this "cease-fire."

Israeli officials immediately responded to the attacks with verbal threats. 28 of the rockets were launched as Israelis woke up to celebrate Israel's 59th Independence Day. Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, labeled the attacks "nothing short of an act of severe provocation." Hamas spokesman in Gaza, Ismail Radwan, stopped short of calling off the cease-fire, saying the actions on Tuesday were “a natural response to Israeli aggression and violations of the truce.” Miri Eisin, the spokeswoman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, stated "Israel will not be restrained forever. We will defend our citizens and choose the time and place to respond."

The Israeli army responded by dispatching helicopters to intercept the gunmen behind the attacks. Missiles were fired at launch pads used to wage the attacks, the army said. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert consulted a number of his military advisors about a possible response to the attack before ruling it out. "For the first time, the Hamas government has taken responsibility for a criminal terror attack which includes the firing of missiles into Israel," a senior aide told Ynet. "Israel needs no evidence to prove that this is Hamas' real face." Minister for Strategic Affairs, Avigdor Lieberman said Tuesday that Israel's continued restraint was being interpreted as weakness and was encouraging terror groups to fire more rockets towards its territory.

According to the Bible, the struggle and debate over the ownership of the land of Israel will continue to rage and will only be settled when Christ returns to the earth. (Isaiah 2:2-4) The Bible indicates that wars will continue and will culminate in a seven-year "peace" agreement in which Israel will be promised "peace and safety" by her neighbors. However, this pseudo-"peace" will be broken in the middle of the agreement by someone the Bible refers to as the antichrist. (Daniel 9:26,27)

The Bible foretells of a false peace that is coming to Israel. And this peace will be preceded by war. And you and I are living right in the middle of all of it. We are privileged and yet responsible.
