I recently asked the youth in a gathering at my church what sin was. “Murder,” the first one yelled. “Kidnapping,” another said. “Stealing.” “Lying.” And the answers stopped coming in so quickly. These answers are good, but obvious, so I pressed them further. What, I asked, caused Cain to fall?
Remember, “het” was at Cain’s door. An error he “should” rule over. Murder was simply the fruition of the jealous depravity that was already at work inside of him. This sin of omission has been rising out of man from the onset of our human nature. It is this subtle, hidden sin which most pervasive and most deadly. We fail to connect with the need for redemption when we only recognize sin as those acts which are instinctively obvious to us.
The Word of God states, “a little leaven leavens the whole lump.” That we are to, “work out our own salvation with fear and trembling.” Jesus said, “If your right arm offends you, cut it off.” In this modern Christian culture the depth of our human depravity is falling short of our full realization. This is unfortunate for without this recognition we remain partitioned from what God has for us. In turn, we are far from effective ministers to this dying world.
We are the light of the world. All around us people are playing out damned existences unaware and unchallenged on their journey towards perdition. While we do well to evangelize those who are broken, addicted and imprisoned we need to not fail at reaching those whom we esteem as cultural equals. Acceptance by man means nothing on the day when all men will give an account before God and we do well to know this.
We are all saturated by fallen nature. Jesus Christ is the only name by which man can be saved. Repent! Make your calling and election sure. Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God and He will lift you up. People are perishing because they lack the knowledge of their depravity and need for salvation. We must wake up, sanctify our hearts and go make disciples of men.
