However, Newton's largest and most time consuming pursuit was the study of the Bible and of the early Church fathers. While Newton is better known for his contributions to science, studying and interpreting the Bible was his greatest passion. Newton once said: "I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by those who were inspired. I study the Bible daily."

Newton's affinty for biblical prophecy has also been documented. Over 250 years before the release of the book "The Bible Code," Newton was convinced that a hidden code remained locked within the Bible waiting to be revealed. Most of his writings upon biblical prophecy can be found in his book Observations upon the Prophecies of Daniel, and the Apocalypse of St. John. (The book can downloaded and read here.) However, according to a recently published letter, Newton believed that the end of the world would occur in the year 2060 A.D. According to the letter, which is now on display in Jerusalem's Hebrew University, Newton based his prediction upon a mathematical calculation in the book of Daniel, which he believed to be very accurate, adding: "It may end later, but I see no reason for its ending sooner."

The letter continues: "This I mention not to assert when the time of the end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash conjectures of fanciful men who are frequently predicting the time of the end, and by doing so bring the sacred prophesies into discredit as often as their predictions fail."

Regarding the last days, Newton wrote that the world would see "the ruin of the wicked nations, the end of weeping and of all troubles, the return of the Jews (from) captivity and their setting up a flourishing and everlasting Kingdom."

Sir Isaac Newton: The father of modern physics and Bible prophecy buff. What a guy.
