If the Bible is anything, it is a prophetic book. With nearly one out of every four scriptures having a prophetic reference it is easy to see why. However, the topic and theme of Bible prophecy has been relegated to the bottom shelves in many, if not most, Christian churches and denominations in our modern era. Why? There are many reasons: lack of interest in Biblical Prophecy of church members, lack of education in Biblical Prophecy of church leaders, and the subjective, and therefore potentially divisive, nature of Biblical Prophecy which lends itself to extreme dogmatism. There is little doubt that the study of Biblical Prophecy has been partially hijacked by many speculative and uneducated charlatans who thrive on hype and breed on people’s inherent fears. So in fairness, many churches have rejected teaching on prophecy because of its highly speculative nature.
However, I am convinced that the modern Church now more than ever needs a sound end times theology. Teaching on the end times is one comfort, not speculation. It is a teaching of hope, not of gloom and doom. If you know Christ, you are safe. If you do not know Christ, you are not safe. Sound teaching on Biblical Prophecy should point to Christ, not to man. For too long, the Body of Christ at large has used Biblical Prophecy incorrectly. So why should a Christian study Biblical Prophecy? To find out when Christ will return? No. To discover some hidden doctrine that will give us goose bumps for a few seconds? No.
The Four-Fold Purpose of Biblical Prophecy
In my estimation, the study of Biblical Prophecy within the confines of the Christian Church has a four-fold purpose:
1) To teach us more about God’s just character and his loving ways (Ps. 25:4-6)
2) To motivate us to a life of holiness and sobriety (2 Pet. 3:11)
3) To comfort us with the eternal hope that awaits us at Christ’s return (1 Thess. 4:18)
4) To provide us with a sense of urgency in witnessing to lost sinners (Matt. 28:18-20).
Therefore, through this article series, we will examine ten specific Biblical predictions that signify the nearness of the Second Coming of Christ. Each of these ten predictions will be covered one by one through a series of ten articles.
