A September Deadline for Iraq?
The battle being waged in Iraq promises to be a hot and sensitive topic as America slowly heads into another election year. Congressional leaders have yet to set a firm time table for a complete troop withdrawal from the volatile region. However, due to the perpetual violence threatening the peace and stability of the region, it is difficult to estimate the impact that a U.S. withdrawal will have on Iraq and the surrounding countries. However, with the election season getting underway, a timetable seems to be emerging that may gain traction. "Congressional leaders from both political parties are giving President Bush a matter of months to prove that the Iraq war effort has turned a corner, with September looking increasingly like a decisive deadline.” So reports a recent issue of the Washington Post.
At least two other important reasons for a quick sense of closure in Iraq exist from the Republican side. One, the new 2008 fiscal spending budget, which begins Oct. 1, will most certainly begin with the Congress placing major constraints on war funding. Second, Republican Presidential candidates consider Iraq a deadweight issue that must be overcome. Closure on the war could possibly serve to aid a Republican Presidential victory in 2008.
Feeling the pressure, the Bush administration has been pressing the Iraqi government to make major reforms by the fall of 2008. The top U.S. Commander in Iraq has been asking the Iraqi people to support a united government and stop sectarian violence while Washington has demanded to see "tangible results quickly" in return for continued support. The Iraqi government and military, realizing the political pressure facing the Bush administration, has been drawing up plans in the event of a quick U.S. military pullout from the region. The Iraqi Defense Minister Abdul-Qader al-Obeidi recently stated that Iraq's military was drawing up plans in case U.S.-led forces left the country quickly. ”The army plans on the basis of a worst case scenario so as not to allow any security vacuum," al-Obeidi said. "There are meetings with political leaders on how we can deal with a sudden pullout."
In essence, if major changes do not materialize by the fall of 2008, mounting domestic and international pressure may force the Bush administration to reconsider its policy in Iraq. September has emerged as the accountability month for Washington.
A Summer Showdown with Iran?
Enter the rogue, terrorist, and maniacal Iranian regime. According to a new report just released this week, "Iran is secretly forging ties with al-Qaida elements and Sunni Arab militias in Iraq in preparation for a summer showdown with coalition forces intended to tip a wavering U.S. Congress into voting for full military withdrawal, US officials say.”
In the report, a senior U.S. official in Baghdad stated that U.S. commanders were bracing for a nationwide, Iranian-orchestrated summer offensive which is designed to hasten a U.S. troop withdrawal. In preparation for a possible victory, Iran has been strategically positioning stockpiles of weapons which has concerned U.S. military officials. Iran would like nothing more than to force a U.S. military retreat and to discredit and humiliate Washington’s regional influence. According to the report, Syria has closely aligned itself with the Iranian strategy in Iraq which comes as no surprise considering their terrorist ties. It is certain that the remainder of 2007 promises to be interesting.
That the Middle East has become the primary focus of politicians and the global media should not come as a surprise to Bible-believing Christians. According to the Bible, Israel, Iraq, Iran, and many of their neighboring countries, will play a special role in what the Bible refers to as the ‘last days.’ Prophecies concerning these ‘last days’ are found all throughout the Holy Scriptures for anyone with eyes to see. Due to the astounding clarity and amazing accuracy of the Bible’s prophecies thus far, simple wisdom dictates that one should consider what the Bible has to say about future events.
